The engraved plaque on the front of the statue reads: "Edwin McMasters Stanton. Born in this city on December 19, 1814. U.S. Attorney General 1860-1861. Secretary of War 1862-1868. U.S. Supreme Court 1869. Died December 24, 1869. Erected 1911."
