Mayor Emma Hull and Benton Harbor, Michigan

During the 1990s, I worked as a staff photographer at the Herald-Palladium in St. Joseph, Michigan. My duties were to provide enterprise art, environmental portraits and stories, coverage of sporting events, and documentation of general and spot news. Emma Hull was mayor of Benton Harbor, Mich., for six years. She had her hands full with many social issues — poverty, crime, and race relations — but always lit up a room with her joyful presence.
