Historic Arthurdale, West Virginia #0256
Arthurdale a community in Preston County W.Va., began to be built in 1933 during the height of the Great Depression and served as a social experiment to offer opportunities and better living conditions for local farmers and miners who were looking for gainful employment.
Seventy-five Wagner-style houses were built during the second phase of construction in 1934 and 1935. These homes, such as this one photographed on May 28, 2020, were two stories with cinderblock foundations, cinderblock or wood-framed first floors, and wood-framed upper stories covered with siding.
